Serbian Input Method for Android

Introduction

The application "Serbian Input Method (dev)" is an Android service that provides a soft onscreen keyboard for typing Serbian Cyrillic.

It is also for now my first foray into writing Android components.

How to Install

Download the application from the Android Market. You will need to do this via your handset. Find the application called Serbian Input Method (dev) on the market and install it as usual.
Show some love to your friendly Android developers by checking their applications out on the Market. Be sure to check the many other fine applications that exist for the Serbian language (keyword: Serbian on the Android Market). There are at least two other Serbian input methods, and you should give them a spin too and see which one suits you best.
Enable the alternate input method. From the main screen, select Settings→Locale & Text →Serbian Input Method (dev) and put a check mark next to it.
Use it when typing. Do a long-press on any text field until a menu appears. Select the item Input Method, and then select Serbian Input Method (dev) from the menu that opens afterwards.

Installing distcc and distccd on Fedora 11

Here's the list of steps you need to do in order to install and run the distributed C and C++ compiler on Fedora 11. Fedora 11 comes with the distcc and distcc-server packages that you can install and readily run via yum. But if you install and try to run the shebang, you will of course find that it does not work out of the box.

What noone tells you is that the installation is not preconfigured to work out of the box. Going to the distcc website does provide some hints on how to install and run, but it is focused on building and running it from the source. That's usually not what you're after if you install binary packages from a distribution like Fedora.

What I found missing on the Internet are the instructions on how to make the daemon work out of the box as a system service, and steps to take to verify that the setup works. Once I mined the solution out of all the nuggets of info that were findable on the net, the final setup details are given here.

For the setup to work you need to edit, as the user root, two files and provide the distcc settings that are valid for your machine: /etc/distcc/hosts and /etc/sysconfig/distcc. You will also want to test if your setup works, and I provide the recipe to do just that.

Note: All the settings seen below will need to be made on all the machines that will take part in the distributed compilation. Also take into account that the steps below are what worked for my setup: I have a laptop (named kravica) that I use every day, and a spare machine (named cowfarm) that sits in the closet and most of the time doesn't do too much. I decided to use the CPU cycles available at that machine to speed up the compilations on the laptop. cowfarm only knows to accept distcc from kravica but doesn't know how to distribute own compilations to kravica. I didn't set this up because I didn't need it. You may want to have a reciprocal setup. The steps below should provide you with enough info that this becomes possible.

Download and install `distcc` and `distcc-server`

You will need to be able to execute the sudo command as current user to do the following.

$ sudo yum install distcc distcc-server

Setup the firewall

Set the firewall to let the distcc connections go in (if you are tunneling distcc through SSH and have SSH access already enabled, you may not need this step)

Various people have attacked this in various ways, and I have found a blog post about running distccd that gets you partially there. Please go and read it first, then come back for the finishing touches.

Edit the distcc hosts file

The contents of /etc/distcc/hosts are as seen below. You will have to edit this file as root, or as a sudo user.

Edit the distcc sysconfig file for Fedora

The contents of /etc/sysconfig/distccd are seen below. You will have to edit this file as root, or as a sudo user.

# This will run the compilation at nice level 5, run a maximum of 5 compile jobs
# and allow incoming connections from all IP addresses of the format 10.0.0.<anything>
# (which corresponds to my LAN addresses)
OPTIONS="--nice 5 --jobs 5 --allow 10.0.0.0/24"

I added the following lines to my ~/.bashrc file, not knowing which variables will take precedence where (I could not discern this from the help available from the 'net):

export DISTCC_HOSTS='localhost cowfarm'
export DISTCC_POTENTIAL_HOSTS='localhost cowfarm'

Restart the distccd daemon

Here is how you can restart the distccd as a system service in Fedora, provided that all settings are OK. I am assuming that your current user can invoke sudo, otherwise the following step will fail with an error.

$ sudo service distccd restart

To test that things work well, you can check the output of the ps command. The output should show distccd running, with the options you set in the configuration files. You need to repeat this restart/check cycle on all the machines that do the distributed compilation.

Start the distcc monitoring

It's easiest to see if your setup is working if you fire up a distributed compilation monitor. Distcc offers two monitors, named distccmon-text and distccmon-gnome, that show compilation info in the text mode and graphical mode respectively. They are both part of the package distcc, so once you installed that package, you should be all set with the monitors.

Either will give you insight in the currently running compilations. The graphical version has a nice, running, 'busy bar' which shows the compilation state of the jobs.

A graphical monitor can be ran like so:

$ distccmon-gnome

A textual monitor can be ran like so:

$ distccmon-text 1

It prints the state of the distributed compilation repeatedly in the terminal. Running distccmon-text without the command line parameter 1 will only run it once. By the way, the number determines the delay after which the data are reprinted, start distccmon-text --help for details.

Example use

I downloaded the project HTTP Server from Apache.org and tried out compiling Apache. The compilation results are shown below: distributed compilation in this case was twice as fast as the normal compile. This is about the expected speedup, since localhost has 2 CPUs and cowfarm adds to that 2 more CPUs, thus doubling the expected throughput.

Distributed compilation:

$ CC=distcc ./configure
$ time make -j 8
real	1m5.046s
user	1m6.831s
sys	0m29.269s

Normal compilation (takes about twice the time of the distributed compilation):

$ CC=distcc ./configure
$ time make

Added the new Skype translation for the version 4.1.

The version 4.1 is fully translated according to the template of the 4.1.0.179 edition of Skype. It is very likely that it will work throughout all the 4.1.x.x. editions.

Introduction

This is a collection of my translations of the Skype VoIP program to Serbian language. For details about the translation, refer to the Questions and Answers page. However, that page is available in Serbian only.

The below give links to the translation files.

The column System is the operating system name for which the translation is intended.
The column Script determines whether the translation is in Cyrillic or Latin script.
The column Date gives the date that the translation was published (recent translations are more polished)
The column Skype Edition contains the version number of Skype for which the translation is made. The translations mostly work also for the versions that do not match exactly with the number given, so you can try them out even if you do not have the matching Skype version. Aikido

Aikido is one of the modern Japanese budo (martial arts).

I hold a first degree ("shodan") black belt in aikikai aikido. I practised at Aikido Stichting Delft (ASD) , and obtained the dan grade from Masatake Fujita-shihan (8th dan aikikai) while under the supervision of Charles Kientz sensei (5th dan aikikai). I consider ASD my aikido house.

I then practiced in Venlo and Gennep, at the school of Pierre Geraedts sensei (6th dan aikikai), and sometimes helped out with the Aikido lessons during the vacation period. My thanks go to both Charles-sensei, for allowing me to continue practice in a different dojo, and to Pierre-sensei, who welcomed me to his school.

After about a year and a half of practicing in Venlo, I moved again, this time across the Atlantic Ocean. I started to practice in Mountain View, California at the dojo of Robert Nadeau-shihan (7th dan aikikai).

The Aikido Lineage shows the connection to the source of Aikido through my teachers.

Како се поставља превод?
Претпоставићу овде да сте инсталирали издање скајпа на енглеском језику.

Најпре преузмите датотеку са преводом са стране са преводима. Пошто скајп не препознаје аутоматски тип датотеке, датотеку преузмите притиском на друго (десно) дугме у читачу мреже и избором ставке за чување („сачувај као“ или „Save As...“). Немојте преузимати притиском на прво (лево) дугме, јер то може да покрене неки други програм.
Одложите датотеку на неко место на диску Вашег рачунара и запамтите где се налази.
Покрените скајп на енглеском језику.
У менију у врху скајповог прозора пронађите ставку „Tools“ и изаберите је. Треба да се отвори мени са више ставки.
У менију који се отворио изаберите ставку „Change Language“. Треба да се отвори још један подмени.
У подменију који се отворио изаберите ставку „Load Skype Language File“. Треба да се отвори прозор за избор датотеке.
Сада се у прозору за избор датотеке вратите на место где сте сачували датотеку са преводом из првог корака, и изаберите је. Притисните дугме „OK“.
Ако је све у реду, ваш скајп је сада на српском језику.

Не ради ми превод, рачунар мисли да је датотека у формату MP3. Шта да радим?
Ово је проблем са подешавањима на Вашем рачунару. Погледајте како исправити подешавања.

Не могу да преузмем превод. Шта се дешава?
Изгледа да Ваш рачунар или веза са интернетом имају проблема. Пријем датотека са преводом сам успешно проверио са више различитих рачунара. На сваком од њих превод је примљен и постављен без проблема. Пробајте да мало сачекате са пријемом а онда пробате поново.

Не могу Вам слати датотеке са преводом на ел. пошту, јер онда уносимо додатне непознате у систем па није лако одредити који део је непоуздан. Пријем преко Интернета је најбољи начин да знам тачно шта је проблем. Досадашње искуство је показало да је углавном проблем са рачунаром примаоца.

Немам баш тачну ознаку издања за које је доступан превод. Да ли ипак могу да користим неки од понуђених превода?
Препоручујем да поставите најновије издање скајпа и одговарајуће издање превода.

Када стиже ново издање превода?
Ново издање превода стиже када се промени други значајан број издања.

То значи на пример, ако је тренутно издање превода 3.8.х.х, да ће нови превод да се појави ако изађе издање скајпа 3.9.х.х или више. Промена са, рецимо 3.8.0.100 на 3.8.0.200 не значи и ново издање превода.

Већ користим постојеће издање превода, а изашло је ново. Да ли треба да инсталирам нови превод?
Начелно се препоручује употреба превода који је намењен баш за издање скајпа које Ви користите. Ако сте инсталирали ново издање скајпа, препоручује се да инсталирате и одговарајуће издање превода. Можете наставити да користите и старо издање превода, уколико установите да је за Ваше потребе старије издање довољно добро. Старије издање углавном значи да ћете с времена на време наићи на непреведене поруке. Ако Вам то не смета, онда не морате ништа да дирате.

Изашло је ново издање скајпа! Када ће превод да буде спреман?
То на жалост зависи од дужине и врсте превода (нови текст или допуна старог). Како преводим између 5 и 10 редова у минуту, то значи да могу да за један сат преведем између 300 и 600 порука.

Издање скајпа број 4.0.0.206 доноси око 3000 нових порука, што значи да је за превођење потребно између 5 и 10 сати активног рада. Како тренутно могу да посветим око 5 сати недељно превођењу, то значи да ће превођење издања број 4 трајати око 2 недеље.

Међутим, пошто преводим у слободно време, не обавезујем се да превод заиста и завршим у неком разумном року. Да се трудим да тако буде, то стоји, али се ни на шта не обавезујем.

И шта сад, треба да гледам у боб кад ћеш да довршиш превод?
Нема потребе.

Нова издања превода редовно најављујем на Вокабуларовом форуму у теми о скајпу. Пријавите се на Вокабулар и задајте да Вас форум обавести кад стигне нова порука.

За технички настројене, најава новог превода може да се покупи помоћу довода за РСС (RSS feed).

Твој превод ми је направио штету на рачунару! Изгубих податке!
Преводе које сам понудио користите увек на сопствену одговорност. Ни у ком случају не одговарам за било какве проблеме изазване употребом превода, укључујучи али не ограничавајући се на: губитак података, повреде на раду и у кући, душевни бол, главобоље, губитак времена, простора, пара, живаца, профита, било какво оштећење или губитак имовине или било чега другог. Другим речима, ако због превода неко упадне у невоље, то је искључиво ваш проблем.

Молим да предлоге, похвале, критике, покуде и остало оставите на скајповом преводилачком форуму. Тако сви могу да имају увид у пријављене и исправљене пропусте.

Шта ће нам уопште превод скајпа на српски? Зар енглеско издање није сасвим довољно?
Скајп (Skype) је преведен на српски јер заслужујемо да имамо превод.

Осим тога, скајп је један од ретких технички-оријентисаних програма који користи широк круг људи. Од тог широког круга људи, не сналазе се сви сјајно са енглеским језиком. Превод је намењен да њима олакша употребу програма.

Један модеран пример је разговор деце-гастарбајтера са родитељима у Србији. Неки већ имају и унуке-гастарбајтере. Скајп је јефтин начин да се разговара, поготово откад је брзи Интернет дошао у Србију, па су и стари родитељи повукли ногу и почели да користе ту новотарију. Пошто знање страних језика није тако широко распрострањено у генерацијама наших родитеља, они ће се вероватно боље снаћи ако пред собом имају издање које говори српски језик.

Али мени је енглески сасвим довољан!
Нема проблема. Не морате да користите превод.

Превода за скајп има колико хоћеш. Зашто да користим баш твој?
Неки од могућих разлога да користите баш мој превод јесу:

Доступан је на ћирилици и на латиници и увек ће бити доступан истовремено на два писма. Аутор вам не намеће које ћете писмо да користите на вашем рачунару! Изаберите сами оно које вам више одговара. Машинско пресловљавање гарантује да су преводи на два писма увек идентични.
Квалитетан је. Аутор превода је читао и књиге које нису део школске лектире и пазио је на часовима српског, тако да је превод елементарно писмен. Аутор се преко 20 година бави рачунарима и техником. Због тога познаје прихваћену терминологију, коју онда користи при преводу. Ако нешто не зна, онда уме да се распита и на основу одговора унапреди превод.
Квалитетно је изведен. Аутор користи збирку преводилачких алата који добар део превођења одрађују аутоматски. То је гаранција конзистентности разних издања превода.
Флексибилан је. Ако умете неки израз боље да формулишете, обратите се аутору. Ако је све у реду, Ваш ће предлог бити уважен.

Напокон, избор превода, као и да ли ћете уопште да користите превод или не, искључиво је Ваш.

Skype Tools

Introduction

The Skype Tools (known also as skype2po) consist of two Python scripts which make the translation of Skype easier than originally intended by its authors.

The scripts allow the translator to tap into the rich set of tools made for the PO file format, such as poEdit or Emacs and friends. My finding is that the translation using these tools is faster and better quality compared to what you can produce manually.

The scripts are:

skype2po.py: Converts Skype's LANG file format into GNU ngettext PO file format.
po2skype.py: Converts GNU gettext PO file format into Skype's LANG file format.

Thesis Defense

From the results obtained in the course of my research, I produced the thesis "An Architecture for Workflow Execution in Adverse Environments".

I defended this thesis with success on June 4, 2007, before the committee appointed by the faculty. The defense started at 12.30 and lasted for precisely one hour. It took place in the Senatzaal (Senate Hall), in the Aula of the TU Delft.

At 12.00, on the same date and at the same place, I gave a short introduction to the thesis material. The introduction and the defense were public events. Everyone was welcome to attend.

A reception for all the attendees followed the committee deliberation.

I hold a Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering from Delft University of Technology.

Until January 2007, I was a student at the Circuits and Systems group, Department Electrical Engineering. My thesis adviser during the research was prof. dr. ir. Patrick Dewilde.

Before I started the research in Delft, I was graduated in 2002 a dipl.-ing. from School of Electrical Engineering, of the University of Belgrade, Serbia.
